Outlaw motorcycle clubs (one percenter bike gangs) and their memorable patches

utlaw motorcycle clubs, also known as one percenters, are biker gangs that are considered “outlaw” because they are not sanctioned by the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) and do not adhere to their rules. Instead, one percenter clubs have their own set of bylaws which may or may not condone illegal activities. Regardless of their bylaws, their 1% status reflects an outlaw sense of pride.

Want to see all of the monstrous vehicles from Mad Max: Fury Road? Check out this collection of cars from the movie!

George Miller insisted that Colin Gibson, production designer responsible for all the cars in Mad Max: Fury Road, make all the cars in the movie not only cool, but real working functional vehicles with ultra-tuned, tweaked out engines – and Gibson delivered the goods. For the main story line, Gibson created 88 final cars, each with its own story and team of mechanics. But all told, he made 150 vehicles, many of which didn’t make it out of the desert.

Mad Max: Fury Road's flame throwing guitar player wasn't CGI - check out the Doof Wagon (or Doof Machine)

The Doof Machine (aka Doof Wagon) rig was constructed from a retired military rocket launching truck to which they added a supercharged V8, six Taiko drums channeling sound from the rear through huge air conditioning ducts, a small lit stage fronted with a car grill, a huge stack of speakers (there’s over 100 working speakers on the Doof Wagon rig) and a red-onesy-suited blind guitar player hammering chords on a custom flame-throwing dual-neck guitar while dangling from bungee-cords and chains. Yes, George Miller created Mad Max: Fury Road’s flame throwing guitar/drum rig wasn’t CGI –it’s the real thing.

Nifty cocktail (drinks) guide created by engineer proves to be surprisingly useful (printable version included)

This cocktail guide was created by an engineer for the US Forest Service in 1974 (I’m not sure why that agency would create such an elaborate document about mixed drinks). It features various drink recipes, in a single printable page, drawn in (and to) engineer-like specifications. It’s surprisingly useful.

Brilliant ad from Salvation Army uses "The Dress" in domestic violence PSA

“Why is it so hard to see black and blue?” reads the headline in a public service announcement advertisement from the Salvation Army. The ad uses the popularity of last week’s viral dress illusion with copy that reads “The only illusion is if you think it was her choice. One in 6 women are victims of abuse. Stop abuse against women.” Brilliant!

Amazing hole-in-one golf shot - ball teed off into sand trap and then mysteriously spits back out into the hole

Hole-in-one golf shots are always entertaining but this one is particularly stunning. Watch as Australian golfer Richard Green tees off on the par-four 15th hole and shanks it right into a sand bunker before turning away in disgust. The ball disappears into the bunker and then as if by magic, spits right back out (at a near right angle) and rolls into the hole.

The Doomsday Clock - a grim reminder that we are not immortal

Called the Doomsday Clock, it hangs on a wall in the University of Chicago. In over 65 years, the time has only changed twenty-one times. Created in 1947, during the dawn of the atomic age, the universally-recognized clock represents the countdown to human extinction. The closer they set the clock to midnight, the closer the scientists believe the world is to global disaster.

Hands on installation with North Korea's official Red Star 3.0 Server operating system

Red Star OS, North Korea’s official Red Hat-based Linux distro, is very easy to install in a VM. Given recent revelations of its many security holes, it’s an excellent opportunity to install the operating system in a local VM and then pound it for vulnerability assessment. At the very least, this will let you derive a baseline vulnerability footprint irrespective of any firewalls or security protection devices that a real North Korean target may be running.

Are sunspots killing us? New research hints sunspots at birth shorten overall lifespan

Research out of Norway drew a surprising conclusion this week – sunspots appear to shorten a person’s lifespan by over half a decade. Researchers studied more than 9,062 Norwegian births from 1676 to 1878 and using the occurrence of sunspots, a barometer of sorts for solar activity, found that lifespans were shorter by slightly over five years for persons born during years of high solar activity.

The controversial works of Charlie Hebdo offend more than just Muslims

When masked gunmen stormed the offices of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, they were heard to shout “Allahu Akbar” or “God is Great” in Arabic. That the attackers were Muslim terrorists is without question. So what had Charlie Hebdo published to upset followers of Islam? Turns out they have a long history of satirical (and vulgar) “comedy” aimed at religion – Islam in particular. Here’s a sample along with explanations of what the cartoons depict.

Who says the French are sissies - France and other European nations take to the street in support of Charlie Hebdo

After three masked gunmen killed 12 in the offices of left-wing magazine Charlie Hebdo, the French quickly took to the streets showing the world they are not afraid. Marching under the banner of “Je Suis Charlie” or “I am Charlie”, demonstrators in France, England, Spain, Germany, and Italy hit the streets creating a somber but exciting display of solidarity. Their message was clear – “We will not change our lifestyles or beliefs under threat of terrorists.”
